One to One Coaching

What is it and why?

Listen here

Searching Wikipedia, the definition of coaching is “A form of development in which an experienced person, called a coach, supports a learner or client in achieving a specific personal or professional goal by providing training and guidance. The learner is sometimes called a coachee”.

Within most teams in any business the Leader will carry out 121s (or should do) with their direct reports on a monthly basis. It sets out expectations and reviews progress, providing guidance for the coachee.

Organisations that fail to do this and do it well, will never get best performance from individuals. Coaching properly is a skill but one that delivers high results.
Think about sports people…They all have coaches…Away from business, I coach athletes. I discuss race schedules, create training plans and work with them at running tracks.

Yet there are times when the need to find a coach becomes important…Think of self-employed people, or Leaders that need outside help…Perhaps someone that needs some guidance and in confidence?

The International Coaching Federation evidenced that 80% of people that receive coaching report increased self-confidence and over 70% benefit from improved work performance. 86% of companies report that they recouped their investment on coaching and more.

On occasions a Coach may discuss areas and issues that the coachee may neglect or push to one side, but ultimately have to be tackled…Similarly they can discuss issues from a view point that others may not!
The benefits to expect from 121 coaching will include:

  • Setting and working towards the achievement of the appropriate goals
  • Improved self-confidence and job satisfaction
  • The ability to contribute more effectively to the team and the organization
  • Taking greater responsibility in the work place
  • Improved decision making

Naturally, these are generic benefits, hence a good coach will uncover by effective questions and discussions, more specific needs and then create with the coachee the pathway to improved success.

Always remember, help is always closer than you think!

“Each person holds so much power within themselves that needs to be let out. Sometimes they just need a little nudge, a little direction, a little support, a little coaching, and the greatest things can happen.”
Pete Carroll
