WEEKLY FOCUS

Doubt to Do

Part Five… Affirmations
Listen to the podcast here.

Our Weekly Focus (currently twice weekly), is taking you all on my own personal journey….A 200 cycle ride 7th/8th July. Physical training is just one part…Mental training is equally, if not more important.

Just as with anything that we do in life, business, personal, sport….in absolutely everything we have to believe in ourselves. Much of this is about changing our own self talk. One of the most powerful ways of doing this is by creating a set of affirmations.

Affirmations are sentences aimed to affect the conscious and the subconscious mind. The words composing the affirmation will help to create mental images in the mind, which will help to inspire, energize and motivate. The regular repeating of the affirmations, and the subsequent mental images created will affect the subconscious mind, and as explained in previous weeks, influences our behaviour and performance.

Affirmations are short statements about a behaviour that you want to change. They must be written in the present tense and be about yourself…The present tense makes them more real…I am and not I will!

So for example, in terms of my bike ride…

  • I am finishing the 200 mile bike ride
  • I see the hundreds of smiling faces
  • I look to the sky and feel amazing
  • I punch the air
  • The crowd is cheering
  • My family is waiving to me
  • I feel incredibly proud of myself
  • I am simply ecstatic
A previous article explained that we live our lives on our perception of reality. Similarly, the fact that the sub conscious mind stores everything- Fact or fiction?

The key is to repeat the statements to yourself in a very positive way and where you are actually picturing the success. Repeat morning and evening and on a number of occasions. After 28 days, the mind will accept the affirmations as fact…Creating lasting and sustainable changes to performance.
