Change and transition are related concepts, and a term that we often hear used…but they are not the same. Lets look at what it really means!

Change refers to an external event or situation that is different from the way things were before. It happens quickly and can often be observed or measured.
Examples could include, getting a new manager at work, moving to a new work base, introducing new technology in a company, and starting a new role or career. There are then key traits of change.

They can be sudden or planned, and often imposed from the outside. They will be visible and tangible, and will usually affect processes, environments or buildings.

What then is transition? This is best described as the internal, psychological process that people go through to adjust to change. It’s about how individuals come to terms with a new situation. Examples of transition, could include, learning how to work with a new manager, getting used to the culture of a new  job or change of role…then letting go of old habits or roles. How does this then manifest? It takes time…it’s a process, not an event. It happens internally, in the mind and emotions..it involves letting go, adapting, and embracing something new.

Change is an external event while transition is the internal process.
Change happens fast but the transition happens slowly and over time.
Change focuses on what is different, transition on how people adjust.
Change is driven by situations while transition is about the emotions and mindset.

The importance of this is understanding both the difference and the implications.
Leading people through organisational change more effectively, and supporting others (or yourself) emotionally during life changes. We should not forget the latter. While we make think about others, reflect on yourself and your own thoughts and emotions.
Planning for not just the event, but the emotional journey…emotionally intelligent leaders will understand that where there is change, the transition will need to be carefully handled!
