Mirror mirror on the wall, who is the most talented of them all?

Listen here

With the world cup now in full swing and as we watch the most talented of footballers on the world stage, our thoughts turn to who will win the coveted Jules Rimet trophy.

Let’s return to the title, “mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the most talented of them all”? First of all, ask yourself “talent will only take you so far, what then becomes the defining factor”? The biggest factor is clearly the mind!

How often do we hear people called “mentally strong”? What is going through players’ minds before they emerge from the dressing rooms? What of the walk to the penalty spot, to take that decisive penalty?

Almost all of these things will have been prepared for…when England won the Rugby World Cup in 2003, Sir Clive Woodward prepared the players for every scenario possible.

How we prepare mentally is critical to our success. Remember, we live our lives on our perceptions of reality and not reality itself…we believe what we tell ourselves…Seventy thousand thoughts pass through our mind every day…work out for yourself, how many of those are negative, and then the effect!

What three things will help you mentally, and help those teams to win the World Cup?

  • …the simple act of how we talk to ourselves. Changing our internal dialogue. We live our lives on our perceptions of reality, and not reality itself! Celebrate mentally all of the successes that you have each day…there will be many…push away negative self-talk, and be proud of your achievements
  • …strong powerful statements, doing words, describing in the present tense what success will look like, “I walk to the penalty spot, I am feeling great, I am about to smash the ball into the net, I am about to win the game, I am totally confident.” Repeated twice daily and for thirty days, the actions and words become habit forming
  • …Simply an extension of affirmations…Picturing the future success in your    mind…a vivid picture, and one that you can replay in your mind at any time. What the  mind can see, the body can achieve!

On reflection, perhaps the title should be “mirror mirror on the wall, who is the most prepared of them all”

“Don’t be pushed around by the fears in your mind. Be led by the dreams in your heart.”
