Employee Engagement- It’s not about the money!

Listen to the podcast here.

I recently visited a well know High Street brand name food store. The smaller style as opposed to the large supermarket version. I had not been in for a little while, and was delighted to find the same charming assistant that served me previously.

It did surprise me a little…Why? Because the last that I had spoken with her, it transpired that she had a 25 mile journey each way meaning catching three buses. It was the only job and vacancy available.

I asked why she did not ask for an internal transfer. The answer?

“I love the people that I work with so much”.

An incredible response and what a thumbs up for her colleagues and Store Manager.

Money is the contract in getting people to work for you. No more…If you truly want the same reaction from the lady mentioned, make sure of the following:

  • Reward and recognition must be in place, and fair and equitable to all
  • In the same way, celebrate success together
  • “Please” and “Thank You” must be a key part of your vocabulary
  • Communication must be two way and timely. Also clear and understandable!
  • Similarly expectations of the role and of each other must be clear and communicated
  • Feedback on performance is essential. This should form part of any “Employee Engagement” programme, and not just as part of a coaching/121 session
  • Create an environment where people enjoy coming to work
  • Consider creating a charter or expectations of each other, to enable the team to function as one.

And equally importantly…Smile and have some fun!

“Always treat your employees exactly as you want them to treat your best customers.”
